Debbie Harry, the iconic lead singer of Blondie, has spoken candidly about her past struggles with drug addiction in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.

Harry, 80, revealed that she and her ex-partner Chris Stein, also a member of Blondie, used drugs to cope with an "emotional rollercoaster" during the height of their addiction.

"We needed to do some drugs to stabilize ourselves from some kind of emotional rollercoaster. Had we gone to a shrink, we probably would have been severely medicated," she explained. "But that also was a sign of the times, because drugs were everywhere. In my social circle, people would come over and just do drugs together."

Harry also acknowledged the prevalence of heroin use at CBGB, the iconic New York City music venue where Blondie frequently performed in the 1970s.

"A lot of it was going around, but I never got the impression that people were nodding out, sniveling old junkies," she said. "It was a different atmosphere. Now, I feel it was a waste of time, but I don't regret having had the experiences."

In the past, Harry has been open about her heroin use, calling it a "necessary evil" in a 2019 interview with The Guardian.

"To some degree, it was self-medicating," she said at the time. "It was a rough, depressing time of life and it seemed to suit the purpose, but then it outlived its benefits."

Harry has since overcome her addiction and has spoken publicly about the importance of seeking help.
